The Art of Fernand
In the realm of contemporary art, there exists a rising talent whose mastery of color transcends traditional boundaries, captivating audiences and igniting a new wave of emotional connection. Fernand, a visionary painter, has been making waves with his ability to express a myriad of emotions through his vibrant and evocative artworks.

What sets Fernand apart is his profound understanding and implementation of color theory, particularly simultaneous contrast, to convey a spectrum of emotions on canvas. Through the bold and deliberate use of color, he deftly navigates the dichotomy and complexities of human sentiment, offering viewers an immersive experience that transcends the boundaries of traditional art.
Fernand was born in Jamaica in 1965 to a mother of African ancestry and a father of Portuguese ancestry. His father’s great grandparents were Jewish immigrants who fled Portugal to escape the Spanish Inquisition. The images of his early artworks had a leaning toward European sensibilities. Over the years he has managed to create a synthesis of both ancestral cultures within his artworks.

Unlike many artists who draw inspiration from the natural world, Fernand focuses his artistic lens inward, delving into the landscapes of the mind and the realms of subconscious imagery. His introspective approach to painting results in a body of work that is contemplative and captivating, drawing viewers into a world that blurs the line between reality and the intangible.
The artist’s technique of utilizing simultaneous contrast – the visual effect created by placing complementary colors alongside each other to intensify their respective properties – is a hallmark of his practice. By skillfully employing this technique, Fernand brings a heightened sense of dynamism and depth to his compositions, evoking visceral and often thought-provoking responses from those who behold his creations.
In his own words, Fernand describes his work as “an exploration of the human emotional spectrum through the language of color.” Whether it be the juxtaposition of vibrant hues to convey a sense of conflicting emotions or the harmonious blending of tones to evoke tranquility, each piece serves as a visual narrative of the artist’s own emotional journey. One patron once exclaimed “His artworks make me feel. I hate it yet I love his work.”

As Fernand continues to tread new ground in the art world, his unique approach to color and imagery promises to leave an indelible mark on the contemporary art landscape. His ability to unveil the depths of human emotion through a canvas and palette is a testament to the enduring power of art to speak to the soul.
Fernand is presently working on a series of paintings which he calls “Against The Wall,” which will be exhibited at the National Fine Arts Festival, Liguanea, Kingston, Jamaica on April 28, 2024. The series explores the psychological challenges experienced when life is not kind and ones back is against the wall.
