Per la prima volta negli oltre venticinque anni di storia della Fondation Beyeler l’intero museo e il parco circostante sono palcoscenico di una mostra sperimentale d’arte contemporanea. Organizzata dalla Fondation Beyeler in collaborazione con la Fondazione LUMA, la mostra riunisce i lavori di 30 operatori d’arte di diverse nazionalità e discipline, tra cui Michael Armitage, Anne Boyer, Federico Campagna, Ian Cheng, Chuquimamani-Condori e Joshua Chuquimia Crampton, Marlene Dumas, Frida Escobedo, Peter Fischli, Cyprien Gaillard, Victor Man, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Wade Guyton, Carsten Höller con Adam Haar, Pierre Huyghe, Arthur Jafa, Koo Jeong A, Dozie Kanu, Cildo Meireles, Jota Mombaça, Fujiko Nakaya, Alice Notley, Precious Okoyomon, Philippe Parreno, Rachel Rose, Tino Sehgal, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Ramdane Touhami e Adrián Villar Rojas.
L’esposizione è stata ideata da Sam Keller, Mouna Mekouar, Isabela Mora, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Precious Okoyomon, Philippe Parreno e Tino Sehgal in stretta collaborazione con gli operatori d’arte e intende favorire la libertà artistica, lo scambio interdisciplinare e la responsabilità collettiva. Come dichiarato da Philippe Parreno e Precious Okoyomon, questo approccio riconosce “le difficoltà e incertezze implicite nel coinvolgimento di un gruppo composito di artiste e artisti, ma anche il fatto che questa aggregazione è parte integrante del processo creativo”. La mostra si configura come “una proposta dinamica più che statica, un progetto ontologico che si evolve e riflette la complessità e molteplicità insite nell’incontro di voci artistiche differenti sotto uno stesso tetto”. Siccome la mostra è concepita come un organismo vivente che muta e si tramuta, un numero crescente di partner di cooperazione ha contribuito con le proprie idee a modellare la mostra in ogni sua fase, dall’ideazione e pianificazione alla produzione, dall’allestimento alla prova in pubblico. Per esempio, Tino Sehgal è stato invitato a creare elementi espositivi trasformativi per la presentazione generale e, in particolare, per le opere della collezione permanente.

Analogamente a mostre collettive quali “Il Tempo del Postino” (organizzata da Art Basel, Fondation Beyeler e Theater Basel con il sostegno della Fondazione LUMA e su incarico del Manchester International Festival e del Théâtre du Châtelet, Parigi) o “To the Moon via the Beach” (commissionata e prodotta dalla Fondazione LUMA), questo progetto delinea percorsi invece di rigidi processi. Come la mostra esperienziale stessa, anche i titoli della rassegna estiva vengono scelti con l’apporto dei partecipanti e cambiano periodicamente.
Nell’elenco dei partecipanti figurano artiste, poeti, architette, designer, musiciste, compositori, filosofe e ricercatori. A tutti loro è stata data licenza di trasformare gli spazi della Fondation Beyeler, siano essi le sale, i giardini, le terrazze, ma anche gli ambienti non convenzionali come la biglietteria, il “green room”, lo shop, il foyer e il giardino d’inverno. Per il pubblico è un’opportunità imperdibile di riscoprire in modo inaspettato le sale espositive esistenti e di esplorare le aree meno abituali del museo. I visitatori che accedono in ore diverse vivranno esperienze diverse: ai differenti intervalli temporali si sovrappongono mostre, momenti sociali, performance, concerti, letture di poesie, conferenze e attività svolte in comune, che invogliano a ritornare più volte grazie all’offerta di biglietti multipli. L’architettura espositiva labirintica invita a esperire la mostra secondo varie prospettive.
Le connessioni e le interrelazioni tra i singoli lavori sono sviluppate in stretto dialogo con le artiste e gli artisti. Questa reciprocità si estende anche alle opere della collezione permanente, che i partecipanti hanno a disposizione come risorsa e che fanno parte integrante della mostra. In aggiunta ai progetti artistici temporanei sono esposte, tra le altre, opere di Louise Bourgeois, Paul Klee, Claude Monet e Vincent Van Gogh.
La prima edizione di questo progetto collettivo si tiene quest’estate a Basilea (CH). Nel corso della sua durata la mostra di gruppo interdisciplinare si evolverà e cambierà, proprio come un organismo vivente. Le prossime iterazioni saranno presentate in forma diversa ad Arles e in altre sedi di LUMA.

Il museo d’arte di Riehen presso Basilea è internazionalmente rinomato per le sue mostre di altissima levatura, per la sua importante collezione di arte moderna e contemporanea e per il suo ambizioso programma di eventi. L’edificio del museo situato in un parco idilliaco con alberi secolari e splendidi stagni di ninfee è opera dell’architetto Renzo Piano. La sua posizione nel mezzo di una zona ricreativa con vista su campi di grano, pascoli e vigneti ai piedi della Foresta Nera è straordinaria. For the first time in the Fondation Beyeler’s more than 25-year history, the entire museum and its surrounding park will be transformed into the site of an experimental exhibition of contemporary art. Organised by Fondation Beyeler in partnership with LUMA Foundation, the show will bring together the work of 30 participants from different backgrounds and disciplines, including Michael Armitage, Anne Boyer, Federico Campagna, Ian Cheng, Chuquimamani-Condori and Joshua Chuquimia Crampton, Marlene Dumas, Frida Escobedo, Peter Fischli, Cyprien Gaillard with Victor Man, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Wade Guyton, Carsten Höller with Adam Haar, Pierre Huyghe, Arthur Jafa, Koo Jeong A, Dozie Kanu, Cildo Meireles, Jota Mombaça, Fujiko Nakaya, Alice Notley, Precious Okoyomon, Philippe Parreno, Rachel Rose, Tino Sehgal, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Ramdane Touhami and Adrián Villar Rojas.
Developed by Sam Keller, Mouna Mekouar, Isabela Mora, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Precious Okoyomon, Philippe Parreno and Tino Sehgal in close collaboration with the participants, the exhibition aspires to stimulate artistic freedom, interdisciplinary exchange and collective responsibility. The approach, as stated by Philippe Parreno and Precious Okoyomon, acknowledges ‘the complexities and uncertainties involved in bringing artists together, yet it also embraces these entanglements as integral to the creative process’. The show is envisioned as ‘a dynamic rather than static proposal, an evolving ontological project that mirrors the complexity and diversity inherent in bringing together distinct artistic voices under one umbrella’. Conceived as a living organism that changes and transforms, participants have contributed their thinking on every phase of the making of an exhibition from its conception, elaboration and production to its creation and presentation. In particular, Tino Sehgal has been invited to create transforming display features for the overall presentation, especially extending to works from the in-house collection.
Similar to group shows such as “Il Tempo del Postino” (organized by Art Basel, Fondation Beyeler and Theater Basel with support by LUMA Foundation and commissioned by Manchester International Festival and Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris) and “To the Moon via the Beach” (commissioned and produced by LUMA Foundation), the project traces pathways rather than strict filiations. Just like the exhibition and the experience itself, the title of the summer show is contributed by the participants and will periodically change.
The list of participants features artists, poets, architects, designers, musicians, composers, philosophers and scientists. They each have been welcomed to transform Fondation Beyeler, extending across the galleries, gardens, terraces, and ancillary spaces, such as the box office, green room, shop, foyer and winter garden. The public will rediscover the existing gallery spaces in an unexpected way and explore spaces that they are not familiar with. Turning up at different times, visitors will have different experiences within the same spaces. Multiple temporalities will overlap through exhibition displays, social spaces, performances, concerts, poetry readings, talks, and community activities, encouraging multiple visits by offering return tickets. The labyrinth-like exhibition architecture invites audiences to explore the show in different ways.
Connections and interrelationships between individual works are developed in close dialogue with the artists. This exchange also extends to works from the Fondation Beyeler collection, which has been made available to the artists as a resource and forms an integral part of the exhibition. Alongside the temporary art projects, works by artists including Louise Bourgeois, Paul Klee, Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh will be on display.
The first iteration of this collective project will be presented at Fondation Beyeler this summer, with subsequent iterations of the interdisciplinary group show being restaged in yet another form in Arles and other LUMA locations.

The Fondation Beyeler in Riehen near Basel is internationally renowned for its high-calibre exhibitions, its outstanding collection of modern and contemporary art, as well as its ambitious schedule of events.
