Nell’autunno 2025 la Fondation Beyeler presenta la prima grande  retrospettiva in Svizzera dedicata a a Yayoi Kusama (*1929, vive e lavora a Tokyo), una tra le artiste più influenti del XX e XXI secolo, La mostra, organizzata in stretta collaborazione con Kusama e il suo studio, raccoglie oltre 300 opere provenienti da collezioni in Giappone, Singapore, Paesi Bassi, Germania, Austria, Svezia, Francia e Svizzera e mette in rilievo la  risonanza di quest’artista a livello mondiale e la perdurante rilevanza del suo lavoro.

L’esposizione offre una panoramica esaustiva sul percorso creativo di  Yayoi Kusama che abbraccia un arco di più di sette decenni, dagli esordi nel Giappone del dopoguerra fino al suo odierno status di icona dell’arte contemporanea. La mostra si apre con dipinti e acquarelli a tutt’oggi poco noti risalenti ai primi anni 1950  e realizzati a Matsumoto, città natale dell’artista. Segue un approfondimento sugli anni formativi trascorsi a New York, dove Kusama si stabilì alla fine degli anni 1950 e dove negli anni 1960 e 1970 assurse a figura centrale dell’avanguardia. Rientrata in Giappone, negli 1970, la sua arte si sviluppò ulteriormente e si arricchì di un linguaggio visivo profondamente personale. Oggi Kusama è mondialmente considerata una delle maggiori artiste viventi, che si distingue per i suoi lavori sorprendentemente innovativi e pregnanti e che con immutata energia continua a produrre nuove opere.

Nel corso di una carriera che copre più di settant’anni l’artista si è sempre rifiutata di lasciarsi incasellare in qualsivoglia categoria. tenuto conto dell’ampio spettro dei media utilizzati pittura, disegno, scultura, installazione, performance, collage, moda, letteratura e cinema – Kusama si annovera tra gli artisti più poliedrici e influenti dei nostri tempi. La mostra illustra i periodi più significativi della sua arte radicale e innovativa e tratteggia un ritratto dinamico di un personaggio che ancora oggi rivoluziona il nostro modo di comprendere e fruire l’arte.

Centrale per la visione di Kusama è il concetto di infinito – inteso non soltanto come mezzo formale, bensì come realtà spirituale e psicologica concretamente vissuta. Gli elementi di stile che caratterizzano Kusama – polka dots (punti), reticoli, specchi e motivi ripetuti– rappresentano ben più di una cifra estetica e riflettono anzi il suo profondo confrontarsi con vita e morte, con l’annullamento del sé e con l’anelito alla trascendenza. Dall’universo ipnotico dei dipinti infinity-net fino all’intensità immersiva delle sue infinity mirror room, pensate appositamente per questa mostra, le opere di Kusama avviluppano lo spettatore come spire che si susseguono. Le sue installazioni dissolvono i confini tra interno ed esterno, tra corpo e spazio, tra individuo e cosmo. Attraverso la ripetizione incessante di forme e motivi Kusama giunge a esprimere il ritmico pulsare della vita che costituisce dei fondamenti della creazione di quest’artista.

Le opere di Kusama non sono fatte soltanto per essere solo osservate, ma anche per essere esperite, in particolare le installazioni spaziali e quelle a specchi  che immergono l’osservatore in una sorta di liquido fluttuante.   In tal modo Kusama tramuta i conflitti personali in un’esperienza collettiva, la sua arte in un luogo di confronto e consolazione, di forza e vulnerabilità.

La mostra pionieristica riunisce sia opere iconiche – tra cui oltre 130 pezzi finora mai esposti in Europa – sia nuove opere concepite appositamente per l’occasione. Tra i momenti salienti figurano gli affascinanti primi lavori di Kusama, i suoi Infinity Nets e Accumulations, Narcissus Garden, 1966/2025, nonché Infinity Mirrored Room: Illusion Inside the Heart, 2025. «Yayoi Kusama» comprende inoltre una nuova Infinity Mirror Room. Alle visitatrici e ai visitatori si offre la rara occasione di vivere l’ampia gamma della produzione di Kusama negli spazi della Fondation Beyeler. Le opere che si snodano lungo più di dieci sale coinvolgono non solo gli interni e l’architettura del museo, ma anche il parco adiacente.  Le iconiche Infinity Mirror Room di Kusama e le sue opere scultoree travalicano i limiti degli spazi espositivi e spiegano un accattivante contrappunto di luce, colore e forma, un’interazione artistica tra spazio, natura e fruizione.

La retrospettiva fornisce l’occasione di incontrare su piani diversi un’artista i cui lavori mettono in discussione la fruizione artistica, stimolano il pensiero e suscitano reazioni inattese. La mostra celebra la sconfinata immaginazione di Kusama e ci sfida a ricordare l’infinito dentro di noi.

Il catalogo della mostra, riccamente illustrato, è curato da Leontine Coelewij, Stephan Diederich e Mouna Mekouar. È pubblicato da Hatje Cantz Verlag, Berlino, ed è progettato da Teo Schifferli. La pubblicazione, realizzata insieme all’artista e al suo studio, raccoglie testi provenienti da diversi ambiti – astrofisica, biologia, moda, informatica e sociologia – di Emanuele Coccia, Katie Mack, Stefano Mancuso, Ralph McCarthy, SooJin Lee, Agata Soccini e Helen Westgeest, oltre a materiali d’archivio e contributi di Kusama stessa, che offrono un’approfondita visione del suo universo.

La Fondation Beyeler di Riehen presso Basilea è internazionalmente rinomata per le sue mostre di altissima levatura, per la sua importante collezione di arte moderna e contemporanea e per il suo ambizioso programma di eventi. This autumn, the Fondation Beyeler is proud to present the first solo exhibition in Switzerland dedicated to the work of Yayoi Kusama (*1929, lives and works in Tokyo), one of the most groundbreaking artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. The exhibition, developed in close collaboration with the artist and her studio, brings together over 300 works from Japan, Singapore, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Sweden, France and Switzerland, underscoring the global resonance and enduring impact of Kusama’s artistic legacy.

Spanning over seven decades, the exhibition traces Kusama’s extraordinary journey from her earliest creative efforts in postwar Japan to her internationally celebrated status today. Beginning with rarely seen paintings and watercolours made in the early 1950s in her hometown of Matsumoto, the exhibition follows her bold transition to New York in the late 1950s, where she played a formative role in the avant-garde scenes of the 1960s and 1970s. Returning to Japan in the 1970s, Kusama continued to reinvent her artistic language in deeply personal and politically resonant ways. Today, she is arguably the most wellknown living female artist and remains a force of remarkable innovation and relevance, creating new work with undiminished intensity.

Through more than 70 years of production, Kusama has consistently defied categorization. Her practice spans a rich array of media – painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, performance, collage, fashion, literature, and film – making her one of the most versatile and influential artists of our time. The exhibition foregrounds key periods of radical invention, offering a dynamic portrait of an artist who continues to reshape our understanding of art and experience.

Central to Kusama’s oeuvre is the concept of infinity – not merely as a formal device, but as a lived, spiritual, and psychological reality. Her hallmark motifs – polka dots, nets, mirrors, and repetitive forms – are more than aesthetic signatures; they reflect a profound meditation on the cycles of life and death, the dissolution of the self, and the desire for transcendence. From the hypnotic intricacy of her infinity net paintings to the immersive intensity of the Infinity Mirror Rooms especially produced for the exhibition, Kusama creates worlds that envelop the viewer in endless visual loops. These recursive environments disrupt the boundaries between interior and exterior, body and space, self and cosmos. Through repetition, Kusama evokes the rhythmic pulse of existence.

Her works are not simply to be observed – they are to be experienced. Her mirrored installations and expansive environments pull viewers into perceptual and emotional states of suspension and immersion. In doing so, Kusama transforms personal struggle into shared sensation. Her art becomes a space of connection, where repetition offers both confrontation and comfort, vulnerability and power.

This landmark exhibition will feature a wide range of iconic pieces, including over 150 works that have never been shown in Europe, alongside new works produced specifically for this occasion. Among the highlights are her mesmerising early works, the iconic infinity nets and the accumulation sculptures,

Narcissus Garden, 1966/2025, and Infinity Mirrored Room: Illusion Inside the Heart, 2025. “Yayoi Kusama” will also feature a brand-new Infinity Mirror Room and immersive environment created especially for the exhibition. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to experience the full scope of Kusama’s vision – from intimate early drawings to monumental environments – unfolding across the galleries of the Fondation Beyeler. Taking over 10 galleries and the garden, her mesmerising installations will transform not only the museum interiors and architecture but also the adjacent park. Visitors can expect an immersive experience as Kusama’s iconic Infinity Mirror Rooms and vibrant sculptures extend beyond traditional gallery walls, creating a seamless flow of art that engages the museum environment and surrounding landscape in a captivating dialogue of colour, light, and form.

The exhibition offers a multilayered encounter with an artist whose work continues to challenge perception, provoke thought, and awaken feeling. It is a celebration of Kusama’s boundless imagination and an invitation to reflect on the infinite within ourselves.

A richly illustrated exhibition catalogue, edited by Leontine Coelewij, Stephan Diederich, and Mouna Mekouar, and designed by Teo Schifferli, is published by Hatje Cantz Verlag, Berlin. Conceived not just about the artist, but with the artist and her studio, the publication features new texts from different fields such as astrophysics, biology, fashion, computer science, and sociology by Emanuele Coccia, Katie Mack, Stefano Mancuso, Ralph McCarthy, SooJin Lee, Agata Soccini, and Helen Westgeest, archival materials, and contributions from Kusama herself. Through her own words, the book will offer deeper insight into the world as Kusama sees it.

The exhibition at Fondation Beyeler is curated by Mouna Mekouar, Curator at Large, with project management by Associate Curator Charlotte Sarrazin, and is co-organised with Museum Ludwig, Cologne (14 March – 2 August 2026), and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (11 September 2026 – 17 January 2027).

The Fondation Beyeler in Riehen near Basel is internationally renowned for its high-calibre exhibitions, its significant collection of modern and contemporary art, as well as its ambitious schedule of events. The museum building was designed by Renzo Piano in the idyllic setting of a park with venerable trees and water lily ponds. It boasts a unique location in the heart of a local recreation area, looking out onto fields, pastures and vineyards close to the foothills of the Black Forest. In collaboration with Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, the Fondation Beyeler is constructing a new museum building in the adjoining park, thus further enhancing the harmonious interplay of art, architecture and nature.
